First Impression

I pickup up the Burgman on Friday May 2,2003. We went for a 70 mile two up ride the next morning. This bike is very comfortable to ride double. The passenger seat is large with the backrest adding confidence to the passenger. I was not crowded by the passenger at all. The 400 has in interesting quirk. Under acceleration, the engine actually slows down about 500 rpm at about 4000 rpm or 40 mph. This is a bit disconcerting at first but the acceleration seems to continue at a good clip. The Burgman has plenty of power to move two full size adults down the road. Since I am in the initial breakin period I did not do any sustained travel at speeds over 50 mph. The bike has a full set of instruments including a large tach. It starts readily when cold and quickly warms up without hesitation. I am 5' 6" with a 28" inseam and am very comfortable riding this scooter. The cutouts in the floorboards let me put both feet flat on the ground at a stop which aids greatly in the feeling of stability. The brakes are powerful and stop the bike quickly and smoothly in a straight line. The front end does not dive under hard braking. The left brake is a combined front and rear brake with the right brake front only. The suspension is easily adjustable by the knob under the left rear fender. The bike behaved well and did not bottom out over the bumps when loaded at near the max load capacity. I am quite happy with the scooter at this point and am looking forward to putting many more miles riding two up.
